The Better Business Bureau has been around since 1912, helping companies and consumers find reliable, trustworthy businesses to work with. Specialty Merchandise Corporation has been around since 1955, providing homebased business owners with the resources to expand their business and increase their profit. However, the BBB's rating of SMC Corp remains extremely low. Here are some things to consider when researching the SMC Corp BBB reports:
Obtaining a Refund
One of the biggest SMC Corp BBB complaints is that members had difficulty obtaining a refund. The company guarantees that any members who cancel within 30 days of beginning their membership are eligible for a refund of their membership fees, including their membership kit. SMC's Money Back Guarantee ensures that members who no longer wish to sell for SMC are able to return their unused membership kits for a full refund when returned during the first month of their membership.
If a member cancels their membership after 30 days, they are responsible for their membership registration in full. SMC Corp BBB reports from members claiming that they had difficulty receiving their refund may not have met these requirements in order to qualify for a full refund.
Working with "Reloaders"
According to the BBB website, some former SMC Corp members that did not meet the requirements for a membership refund have recently been contacted by "reloaders." The SMC Corp BBB webpage says that companies such as Business Recovery Services have been contacting former SMC sellers that did not receive their full refund and offers their services to help obtain that refund. Employees of these reloading companies illegally pose as police officers or other law enforcement officials and state that they intend to help you get back the money you lost as a result of working with SMC. Reloaders then ask you to write a check for their "help."
These companies are scams and cannot help you obtain a refund for your SMC membership. If you have any concerns or questions about your SMC membership or SMC's refund policy, contact the company directly.
SMC Corp BBB: Accreditation and Government Action
SMC Corp is not a BBB accredited business. However, SMC Corp has met several of the BBB accreditation requirements. The BBB rates businesses using 16 categories including the length of time the business has been in operation, number of customer complaints, number of serious customer complaints, whether those complaints were handled in a timely manner and government action against the company as a result of unfair or unlawful business practices.
SMC Corp has had about 1,000 complaints reported to the BBB during its 60 years of operation. Just 26 of those complaints were serious and all complaints were addressed by SMC Corp. The BBB has even reported that no government action has ever been taken against SMC Corp.
